available Indices

This determines the 'lens thickness'

1.5

1.5 is the standard index plastic lens material used in all glasses when you don't choose to have your lenses made any thinner

1.6

1.6 is a high index lens. You might want to consider 1.6 if the sphere values on your prescription are higher than +/-2.50

1.67

1.67 is high index and often aspheric in design. Aspheric lenses are thinner and flatter. Consider these when your prescription powers reach +/-5.00 or if your frame is quite large

1.74

1.74 index is almost the thinnest plastic index lens on the market (there is 1.76 from Tokai). You usually only need to go to 1.74 if your prescription is above +/-8.00

Stock

Stock lenses are lenses which are pre-made with the sphere and cylinder powers already on the lens. The lens is then set at the required axis in the lab, and then it is cut to shape. They are always cheaper than a specially worked lens, but the quality is the same.

Specially worked

Specially worked lenses are exactly that. They are made as a one-off, and they are optimised for your frame shape and pupil distance measurement. For long-sighted wearers (plus power prescriptions), the lens can be optimised so that the thinnest point on the lens can be made to a knife edge. For short-sighted wearers (minus power prescriptions), you only need to have the lenses specially worked if a stock lens blank is not physically big enough to cut your lens shape from. The only way to make a minus power lens thinner is to choose a higher index.

The lenses

Will my lenses cut out from a cheaper stock lens?

For long sighted wearers (plus power), the uncut lens diameter on a stock lens is 65mm. This means that if there is half of that diameter (32.5mm) or less, from your pupil to the furthest point on the edge of the frame lens shape, then you can have lenses cut from a cheaper stock blank.

For short sighted wearers (minus power), the uncut lens diameter on a stock lens is 70mm (sometimes even 75mm). This means that if there is half of that diameter (35mm) or less, from your pupil to the furthest point on the edge of the frame lens shape, then you can have lenses cut from a cheaper stock blank.
